- Changes in version 3.11b
-
- Version 3.11b significantly improves the detection of "intended viruses"
- and corrupted virus samples, which are frequently found in virus
- collections but pose no credible threat. Unfortunately, those virus
- collections are sometimes used for testing purposes by people who seem
- unable to distinguish between real threats and non-working junk.
-
- A failure of F-PROT to detect some of the "intended" viruses might have
- resulted in the product getting a lower score than it really deserved, so
- we decided to add detection of the "junk" files, when the /COLLECT switch
- has been enabled.
-
- F-PROT may now report:
-
- xxxxxxxx.xxx contains Soandso (non-working)
- or
- xxxxxxxx.xxx is a corrupted or intended virus
-
- This partly explains the large jump between 3.11a and 3.11b in the number
- of viruses and Trojans detected, which went from 58300 to 60300.
-
- An unfortunate side-effect is the size increase of the .DEF files, but we
- are working on that problem.
-
- There are a few other minor changes in 3.11b, but the most significant is
- that it added scanning of MIME-encoded files (base64 and quoted-printable
- encoding).
